The Consolidated Design (CD) Style Chart
Since the mid-1960s, glass insulator shapes have been classified into Consolidated Designs according to the style chart developed by N.R. "Woody" Woodward and first published in his reports, The Glass Insulator in America. These books focus on insulators made and used in the United States, with additional information about Canada and Mexico. Glass insulator collectors and researchers have found the consolidated designs (commonly called "CD numbers") invaluable as a shorthand method of describing insulator shapes.

Glass Insulators From Outside North America
Beginning in 1981, Glass Insulators from Outside North America became the guidebook for "foreign" insulators. Researched and compiled by Marilyn Albers, this book featured an expanded style chart for insulators from beyond the North American continent, assigned by Woody. Their work culminated in a greatly expanded second revision, published in 1992. Some later additions can be found in the 1996 companion price guide.
